Pointe-Noire: puerto del Congo

Pointe-Noire is the second largest city in the Republic of the Congo and its economic capital. Located on the Atlantic coast, the city grew around a port built by French colonizers in the early 20th century. The name "Pointe-Noire" (Black Point) refers to the dark laterite cliffs that dominate the coast.

The diocese of Pointe-Noire was erected in 1953 and covers the Atlantic coast of the Republic of the Congo, a region inhabited by the Vili, kongo and Lumbu peoples. The Cathedral of Santa Maria, built during the colonial period, is the center of the Catholic life of the diocese.

The Protective Virgin of the Sailors

Pointe-Noire is a port and fishing city. The sailors and fishermen of the Congo venerate the Virgin Mary as their protector: before each trip, the crews of the fishing vessels ask for the blessing of the Virgin and carry an image of Mary on their boats. The advocation of Our Lady of the Star of the Sea (Stella Maris) is especially dear in Pointe-Noire.

The Marian celebrations of August 15 (Asunción de María) are the most important in the diocese. The maritime procession, where the faithful accompany an image of the Virgin in a boat through the port, is a unique show in Central Africa.

Iglesia en el Congo-Brazzaville

The Republic of the Congo has a Catholic population that accounts for approximately 33 per cent of the population. The Dioceses of Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire, Owando and Owando are the main ecclesiastical constituencies. The Episcopal Conference of the Congo coordinates pastoral work at the national level.

"When the sea is minced, the fishermen of Pointe- Noire pray to the Virgin. And when the sea is calm, too."

Economy and faith in Pointe-Noire

Pointe-Noire is the center of the oil industry of Congo-Brazzaville, which has attracted workers from all over the country and from Central Africa. The Catholic community of Pointe-Noire is diverse: Congolese of various ethnic groups, Cameroonian, Gabonese and expatriate. The Cathedral of Santa Maria is a meeting place for this multicultural community.
