Marian devotion
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace of Santo Tomé
Santo Tomé · Santo Tomé y Príncipe · Metropolitan Cathedral
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace, located in the capital of São Tomé and Príncipe, is the seat of the Diocese of São Tomé and Príncipe. Founded by Portuguese missionaries in the 15th century, the cathedral is the oldest Catholic monument in equatorial Africa.
São Tomé and Príncipe: the islands of the equator
São Tomé and Príncipe is an archipelago of two main islands located in the Gulf of Guinea, right on the equator. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1470, it was colonized from 1493 onwards. Catholic evangelization was simultaneous with colonization: Portuguese missionaries built churches, chapels, and missions on both islands.
The Diocese of São Tomé and Príncipe, established in 1534, is one of the oldest in Africa. It originally encompassed a vast territory that included part of the West African coast (from Gabon to Angola). Over time, its jurisdiction was reduced to the two islands.
The Cathedral of Saint Thomas
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace (Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Graça) is the most important religious building in São Tomé and Príncipe. Built in the 15th-16th centuries in the Portuguese colonial style, the cathedral features a simple façade with a bell tower, a single-nave interior, and an altarpiece dedicated to Our Lady of Grace.
The cathedral has been restored several times over the centuries, especially after the earthquakes and cyclones that periodically strike the islands. The current building combines original 16th-century elements with 18th- and 19th-century additions.
Marian devotion in the islands
Marian devotion is central to Catholic life in São Tomé and Príncipe, where over 70% of the population is Catholic. The feasts of the Virgin Mary—especially the Assumption (August 15), the Immaculate Conception (December 8), and Our Lady of Grace—are national celebrations that bring the entire community together.
The Marian processions through the streets of Santo Tomé are a spectacle of faith and joy: the faithful, dressed in their finest clothes, accompany the image of the Virgin to the sound of music, songs, and applause. Marian devotion in Santo Tomé has a popular and festive character, typical of Luso-African cultures.
Luso-African culture
São Tomé and Príncipe is a Portuguese-African country: its culture combines Portuguese and African elements. The Catholic religion, inherited from Portuguese colonization, has merged with local traditions: liturgical chants include African rhythms, Marian celebrations incorporate dances of Bantu origin, and festive cuisine blends Portuguese dishes with tropical ingredients.
The diocese of Sao Tome and Principe is under the apostolic administration of the Archdiocese of Luanda (Angola), which strengthens the ecclesial ties between the islands and the continent.
