The Cathedral of the Holy Family

The Cathedral of the Sagrada Familia is located in central Nairobi, on the Mission hill, near the central shopping district. It was built during the colonial period and has been extended and renewed over the years. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Nairobi and the place where the main liturgical ceremonies of the archdiocese are held: priestly ordinations, diocesan celebrations and Marian parties.

Marian devotion in Kenya

The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Kenya is expressed in many ways: the prayer of the rosary in the families and communities, the pilgrimages to Marian shrines, the feasts of the Immaculate Conception (8 December), the Assumption (15 August) and Our Lady of the Rosary (7 October). Kenyan parishes often have rosary cofradies, Legion of Mary groups and Marian associations that organize prayers, retreats and charity works.

Among the most important Marian shrines in Kenya are the Marian Shrine of Subukia, considered the Marian National Shrine of Kenya, and the Grotto of Our Lady of Subukia. The Kenyan Marian devotion combines the universal Catholic tradition with African cultural expressions: songs in Swahili and local languages, liturgical dances and the incorporation of African maternal symbols into Mary's understanding.

La Iglesia católica en Kenia

Kenya has approximately 9 million Catholics, representing about 23 per cent of the population. The first Catholic mission was established on the coast in the 19th century, but the evangelization of the interior began in the late 19th and early 20th century with the Fathers of the Holy Spirit and the Consolates. Today, the Catholic Church in Kenya operates many schools, hospitals and social centres, and is one of the most respected institutions in the country.

The Kenyan Episcopal Conference has actively promoted Marian devotion as part of Kenyan Catholic identity. The pilgrimages to Marian shrines bring together thousands of faithful each year, and the rosary is one of the most widespread devotional practices in Kenyan Catholic families.

"Mary is the mother of all Kenyans, who comforts us in suffering and guides us to her Son."
