The Evangelization of Burundi

The White Fathers (Missionaries of Africa) arrived in Burundi in the late 19th century, establishing the first missions in the area of Lake Tanganica. Evangelization quickly spread among the Hutu and Tutsi population, and Catholicism became one of the most influential institutions in the country. Catholic missions founded schools, hospitals and training centres that played a key role in Burundi & apos; s education and social development.

La catedral de Gitega

The Cathedral of Maria Reina is the most important religious building in Gitega, the former capital of the kingdom of Burundi and the current political capital of the country. The cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of Gitega, is the place where the main liturgical ceremonies of the archdiocese are held: ordinations, diocesan celebrations and Marian parties. Gitega is the seat of an ecclesiastical province that includes the dioceses of Muyinga and Ngozi.

Devotion to the Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception of Mary is the most venerated Marian advocation in Burundi. The celebration of December 8 is one of the most important celebrations of the Burundese liturgical calendar, with solemn masses, processions and community celebrations throughout the country. The Burundian faithful come to the Marian churches to pray, light candles and offer songs in kirundi that express devotion to Mary as a protective mother.

The Catholic Church in times of crisis

The Catholic Church in Burundi has played an important role in the times of the country's crisis, especially during the ethnic conflicts of 1993-2005 that caused hundreds of thousands of deaths. The Catholic churches were in many cases a refuge for the victims of violence, and the Burundian bishops repeatedly intervened as mediators in peace processes. Marian devotion, with its message of reconciliation and forgiveness, has been a comfort for a people marked by suffering.

"Mary Immaculate is the mother of Burundi, who protects us in times of war and leads us to peace."
