Our Lady of the Apostles in Cameroon
Yaoundé · Cameroon · Marian missionary vocation
Our Lady of the Apostles is a Marian advocation that evokes the role of the Virgin Mary in the primitive apostolic community. In Cameroon, this advocation is linked to the Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles of Yaoundé and to the missionary spirituality that has marked the history of the Church in the country.
The origin of the advocation
The advocation of Our Lady of the Apostles or Mary Queen of the Apostles has its root in the account of the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1: 14), which describes the Virgin Mary present in the Upper Room with the apostles, waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Mary is thus the first disciple, who accompanies the Church in her origins and who intercede for the apostolic mission.
This advocation was promoted in Africa by the missionary congregations that saw in Mary a model of reception, service and dedication to the mission. In Cameroon, where evangelization was the work of multiple congregations (espionans, Fathers of the Divine Word, Dominicans, Franciscans), the advocation of Mary Queen of the Apostles resonated with strength.
The Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles
The minor Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles in Yaoundé is the sanctuary dedicated to this advocation in Cameroon. Built in the second half of the 20th century, the basilica is a modern architecture building that combines traditional liturgical elements with African motifs. The interior houses a large mosaic that represents Mary surrounded by the apostles, with Cameroonian landscapes in the background.
The Basilica is the venue of important Marian celebrations, especially the feast of Mary Queen of the Apostles, which brings together faithful from all the archdiocese of Yaoundé. Women's religious communities - especially the Daughters of the Holy Spirit and the Missionaries of Our Lady of the Apostles - have an active presence in the pastoral of the Basilica.
The Missionaries of Our Lady of the Apostles
The congregation of the Missionaries of Our Lady of the Apostles (M.S.O.L.A.) was founded in 1876 in France and arrived in Cameroon in the first half of the 20th century. They are devoted to education, health and pastoral care among the rural communities of Cameroon. His missionary charism is centered on the figure of Mary as a model of surrender to God and to others.
The missionary Church in Cameroon
Cameroon has one of the most dynamic Catholic Churches in Central Africa. With almost 10 million Catholics (38% of the population), the country has 24 dioceses, more than 480 priests and numerous religious congregations. The formation of indigenous priests has been a priority since independence in 1960, and today the Cameroonian Church sends missionaries to other countries in Africa and the world.
