Mary's Assumption: dogma and hope

The dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950, states that Mary was brought in body and soul to heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life. This dogma, of deep theological significance, has had a special impact on Africa, where death and resurrection are central themes of spirituality.

In Chad, the Assumption of Mary is a party of hope. In a country marked by poverty, conflict and political instability, Mary's Assumption is a sign that life does not end with death, but that the Mother of God has already reached the fullness of eternal life.

The August 15 party in Chad

August 15 is one of the most important festivals on the Chadian Catholic calendar. In the southern dioceses - Sarh, Moundou, Doba, Lai - the feast of the Assumption is a community celebration that brings together thousands of faithful. Solemn masses, processions, sara-language songs and popular parties are the center of the celebration.

In Yamena, the capital, the feast of the Assumption has a more urban character: the Catholics of the capital, coming from all regions of the south, meet in the cathedral to celebrate together. The diversity of languages and cultures in the celebration - sara, mundang, musgum, French, Arabic - reflects the richness of the Chadian Church.

The Assumption in the Sara and Mundang Culture

The sara and mundang, the two largest ethnic groups in southern Chad, have matrilineal traditions where the mother occupies a central place. The Assumption of Mary, as the glorification of the Mother of God, has been integrated into these traditions: the faithful sara and mundang see in the Assumption the full realization of divine motherhood.

"When we celebrate the Assumption, we not only celebrate Mary. We celebrate the hope that we will all reach glory."

The Rosary's Cofradies in Chad

The Rosary's cofradies are an important institution in the Chadian Church. In the parishes of southern Chad, the prayer groups of the Rosary meet weekly, usually in the afternoon, to pray the mysteries. The Virgin of the Rosary is invoked as a protector of families, consolation of the afflicted and hope of the poor.
