Angola: from colonization to war

Angola gained its independence from Portugal in 1975, after more than 500 years of colonization. But independence did not bring peace: three liberation movements - MPLA, UNITA and FNLA - faced by power, triggering a civil war that would last 27 years (1975- 2002). The conflict caused more than 500,000 deaths, 4 million displaced persons and the destruction of much of the country's infrastructure.

In this context of violence, the advocation of Our Lady of Peace has acquired a profound meaning for the Angolans. The Virgin of Peace was not just a devotional advocation: it was a living prayer for the end of war.

Marian devotion in war

During the civil war, the Catholic communities of Angola maintained Marian devotion as an act of spiritual resistance. The Rosary prayer groups met in parishes, in displaced persons camps and in improvised shelters. The Virgin Mary was invoked as the Mother who protects her children in the midst of conflict.

The Angolan bishops, gathered at the Episcopal Conference of Angola and Sao Tome, issued numerous messages calling for peace and entrusting the country to the intercession of the Virgin Mary. The advocation of Our Lady of Peace was adopted by several dioceses as the patron of national reconciliation.

Following the Luena Agreements (2002)

The civil war ended on 4 April 2002 with the Luena Accords, signed between the government and UNITA. Since then, Angola has experienced a period of peace and economic growth. The devotion to Our Lady of Peace has evolved: it is no longer just a prayer for the end of the war, but a supplication for reconciliation, social justice and harmonious coexistence among the more than 40 ethnic groups in Angola.

The Marian celebrations of 1 January (World Day of Peace) are particularly significant in Angola, where parishes organize processions, solemn masses and acts of community reconciliation.

The Rosary's Cofradies in Angola

The co-fradies of the Rosary (Irmandades do Rosario) are a centenary tradition in Angola, inherited from the Portuguese colonial era. These lay associations, present in almost all parishes of the country, are dedicated to the daily prayer of the Rosary, charity with the needy and the organization of Marian parties. In many rural communities in Angola, the Rosary fellowship is the only existing social organization, which underlines the central role of Marian devotion in community cohesion.
