Our Lady of Peace in the Central African Republic
Central African Republic · Marian vocation · Peace and reconciliation
In the Central African Republic, a country devastated by the civil war, Our Lady of Peace is the most invoked Marian apvocation. The Virgin of Peace is the intercessor for national reconciliation, the end of violence and coexistence between Christians and Muslims.
Civil war and the need for peace
The civil war in the Central African Republic, which erupted in 2012 with the formation of the rebel coalition Séléka (mostly Muslim), has caused one of the worst humanitarian crises in Africa. Thousands of people have died, millions have been displaced, and inter-ethnic and interreligious violence has destroyed the social fabric of the country.
In this context, the advocation of Our Lady of Peace has acquired an urgent meaning. Central African Catholics invoke the Virgin of Peace as the only hope for a country that seems not to find peace.
The Virgin of Peace in the parishes
The parishes of the Central African Republic organize Marian celebrations dedicated to peace: masses, processions, prayer vigil and acts of reconciliation. The brothers of the Rosary pray for the peace of the country, and the Marian prayer groups meet weekly to intercede for the end of the violence.
In Bangui Cathedral, the image of Our Lady of Peace presides over the main altar. The faithful come to the cathedral to light candles, pray the Rosary and ask for the intercession of the Virgin for her families, her neighborhoods and her country.
The role of the Church in reconciliation
The Catholic Church in the RCA has been a key actor in the reconciliation processes. The Central African bishops, gathered at the Episcopal Conference of the RCA, have issued numerous pastoral letters calling for peace, dialogue and justice. The parishes have organized meetings between Christians and Muslims, and priests have risked their lives protecting civilians on both sides.
Mary / Maryam: Christian-Muslim bridge
In the Central African Republic, where the population is approximately 50% Christian and 15% Muslim, the Virgin Mary (Maryam in Arabic) is a figure venerated by both religions. Central African Muslims recognize Mary as the mother of the prof Isa (Jesus) and consider her a woman of exceptional faith. This shared devotion has been used as a bridge of interreligious dialogue.
