Our Lady of Peace of Yopougon: the apparitions of 1988
Abidjan · Ivory Coast · Most visited Marian Shrine in West Africa
In August 1988, in the popular district of Yopougon (Abidjan, Ivory Coast), catechist Eugène Yapobi claimed to have received visions from the Virgin Mary. What followed was one of the most extraordinary devotional phenomena in West Africa: an improvised sanctuary that attracted hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
The context: Yopougon in 1988
Yopougon is not a quiet village or a remote village: it is one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods of Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d'Ivoire, and one of the most inhabited neighborhoods in all of West Africa. With more than a million residents, Yopougon is a city within the city, with its own markets, mosques and churches, its urban culture that mixes immigrants from all the ethnic groups of Côte d'Ivoire with traders from Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, Senegal and beyond.
In 1988, Abidjan was the "West African Paris," a prosperous country under the chairmanship of Félix Houphouët-Boigny. And in their popular neighborhoods, like Yopougon, lived the millions of anonymous workers who supported that prosperity.
Eugène Yapobi and the first visions
Eugène Yapobi was a catechist of just over thirty years, self-employed, Christian of simple and daily faith. He had no reputation as a visionary or a unique person. The apparitions began in August 1988 and lasted for several weeks. The Virgin appeared to her in the moments of personal prayer, usually at dusk.
The central message was simple: pray for peacefor peace in Côte d'Ivoire, for peace in Africa, for peace in the world. And he asked him to build a chapel in that place of Yopougon, so that it would be a space of prayer open to all.
The tree and the image
One of the most striking elements of the phenomenon was the apparition of an image in a tree (a ficus) of the place. The faithful perceived in the trunk and branches the figure of the Virgin Mary. In a few weeks, the tree became the focal point of a devotion that brought together tens of thousands of people in a residential neighborhood without infrastructure to receive them.
The civil authorities of Abidjan lived those weeks with astonishment and alarm: traffic was blocked, the shops overloaded, and the question of how to manage a spontaneous crowd had no easy answer.
The Civil War and the Virgin of Peace
In September 2002, Ivory Coast fell into the civil war. Yopougon, for its position on the west end of Abidjan, was one of the neighborhoods most affected by the fighting. The sanctuary of Our Lady of Peace became a refuge: the faithful came to pray while the shots were heard in the nearby streets.
Yapobi maintained until the end of his life (died in 2018) that the apparitions were authentic. The Church has not issued a definitive pronunciation, but the sanctuary remains the most visited in West Africa.
