The Catholic presence in Zanzibar: the Cathedral of San José
Stone Town · Zanzibar · Tanzania · Cathedral of the Diocese of Zanzibar
The Cathedral of San José, located in Stone Town (the ancient city of Zanzibar), is the cathedral of the Diocese of Zanzibar. Built in the late 19th century by the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit, it is one of the most important colonial buildings in the Zanzibar archipelago. On a predominantly Muslim island, the cathedral is a symbol of the Christian presence in the African Indian and a place where devotion to the Virgin Mary is lived in a context of interreligious dialogue.
The Evangelization of Zanzibar
Zanzibar, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania, was for centuries a centre of Arab and Swahili trade. Islam arrived on the island in the 8th century, and by the 19th century Zanzibar was a Muslim sultanate under Omani influence. The Holy Spirit Missionaries (Espirian Fathers) established the first Catholic mission in Zanzibar in the mid-19th century, working mainly between the liberated slave population and non-Arab communities.
The Cathedral of San José was built in the late 19th century as the center of Catholic life in Zanzibar. The colonial-style building with local architectural influences is located in the heart of Stone Town, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
The Diocese of Zanzibar
The Diocese of Zanzibar was erected on December 12, 1964, following the Zanzibar revolution and its union with Tanzania. It is suffranea of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam. The diocese includes the islands of Unguja (Zanzibar) and Pemba, with a majority Muslim population. The Catholic community is small but active, composed mainly of faithful from mainland Tanzania working in Zanzibar.
The interreligious dialogue in Zanzibar
The Catholic presence in Zanzibar is developed in a context of interreligious dialogue. The island, with its rich history of trade and cultural mix, has traditionally been a place of coexistence between Muslims, Christians and Hindus. The Diocese of Zanzibar is actively involved in the Islamic-Christian dialogue, working with Muslim leaders in works of charity, education and the promotion of peace.
Marian devotion in the Indian
The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Zanzibar combines the universal Catholic tradition with the Swahili cultural sensitivity. The faithful celebrate the Marian parties with songs in Swahili and participate in processions that remember the maritime traditions of coastal communities. The Virgin Mary is venerated as Stella Maris (Star of the Sea), a protector of the sailors and the peoples of the Indian.
