In Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, venerates Our Lady of the Mercedes, the second patron of the country. The image was brought by the merchants in the 16th century.
The Mercedes Party
Every September 24, Dominicans celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Mercedes with processions, songs and dances. The party is a moment of unity for the Catholic community.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of the Mercedes protected Dominicans during the hurricanes that hit the Caribbean. The faithful believe that the Virgin guides and protects them.
