The diocese of Malakal and its cathedral of San José (South Sudan)

On the banks of the White Nile, the diocese of Malakal - whose missionary origins date back to 1933 and which is suffranea of the Archdiocese of Yuba - has the cathedral of San José as its seat. Taken full by the South Sudanese civil war, this local Church has been a shelter, hospital and shared table for tens of thousands of displaced persons, and today it is reborn by the hand of its Bishop Stephen Nyodho Ador Majwok.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The Cathedral of San José is the episcopal seat of Malakal; together with it, the parish of Christ the King hosted in 2014 more than 800 internally displaced persons before their transfer to the UN compound, which came to protect some 22,000 civilians.
  • In the February 2014 attacks the city was looted and burned; there were deaths in the parish of Christ the King and faithful refugees in the parish of St. Joseph. In 2019, there were only one thousand people left in Malakal, with some 50,000 displaced in the nearby United Nations camps.
  • His bishop, Stephen Nyodho Ador Majwok, is the son of the diocese itself: born in Andong in 1973, he was appointed by Pope Francis on 23 May 2019 and consecrated in Malakal on 28 July of that year, with the mission of raising a diocese in which almost everything was destroyed.
  • When the war broke out in Sudan in 2023, the diocese sent its boat across the White Nile and brought more than 10,000 displaced people to Malakal, many of whom continue to feed, according to Help to the Church in Need.
