Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Highness
Higuey, Dominican Republic
The Virgin of the Altagracia is patron of the Dominican Republic. He was found by a poor man.
In 1502, a settler named Alonso de Trejo lost an image of the Virgin he had with him. He looked all over for her, but he didn't find her. The next day, an Indian found it in a cotton tree, shining with his own light.
The faithful interpreted this as the will of the Virgin to stay in Spanish. The image was taken to the church of Higuey and has since been the patron of the country.
Every January 21, millions of Dominicans celebrate the feast of the Altagracia with processions and singing.
