The Cultural Revolution and the Survival of the Faith (1966- 1976)

Historia mariana china

The Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976) was the most systematic and devastating persecution of the Catholic Church in China. Launched by Mao Zedong to consolidate his power and eliminate the "Four Old" (old customs, old culture, old habits, old ideas), the Cultural Revolution sought to eradicate all forms of religion from the Chinese soil.

The impact of the Cultural Revolution

During the Cultural Revolution, the churches were closed, desecrated or destroyed. The priests, religious and religious were imprisoned, tortured or sent to work camps. The laity were forced to renounce their faith under threat of reprisals against them and their families.

It is estimated that over 5,000 churches and chapels throughout China were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Thousands of priests and religious died in prison or in the labour camps. The institutional structure of the Church was almost dismantled.

Marian devotion during persecution

Despite the brutality of persecution, devotion to the Virgin Mary remained alive in the clandestine. Chinese Catholics hid their images, medals and rosaries, and gathered in secret to pray. Devotion to Our Lady of China, the Miraculous Medal and the Holy Rosary was a key factor in spiritual survival.

Many Catholics testified that the protection of the Virgin Mary helped them to persevere in the faith during the darkest years. The faithful who carried the Miracle Medal or the rosary hidden under their clothes claimed to feel the comforting presence of the Virgin.

Iglesia clandestine

During the Cultural Revolution, the distinction between the "clandestine Church" (faithful to Rome) and the "patriotic Church" (controlled by the government) was consolidated. The Catholics of the clandestine Church refused to join the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, preferring to risk their freedom and life rather than to give up communion with the Pope.

The clandestine priests celebrated mass in private houses, baptized the children in secret and confessed to the faithful under the threat of delation. The Virgin Mary was the protector of this persecuted Church, and her intercession was constantly invoked.

The resurrection of faith

After Mao Zedong's death in 1976 and the end of the Cultural Revolution, the Catholic Church in China began to rise from the ashes. The churches were reopened, the priests released from prison and the faithful repracticed their faith openly.

Devotion to the Virgin Mary was one of the first signs of the resurrection of faith. The images of the Virgin, which had been hidden for years, were revered publicly. The Marian processions, which had been prohibited, resumed with renewed fervor.

The Heritage of the Cultural Revolution

The Cultural Revolution left a deep mark on the Church of China. The persecution strengthened the faith of the survivors and created a culture of martyrdom that has marked Chinese Catholic spirituality to this day. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, especially Our Lady of China, became the center of the spiritual life of Chinese Catholics.
