Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Vitiva Romeria of Our Lady of Caravaggio is held in the shrine of Farroupilha, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is a celebration linked to the agricultural life and the devotion of the communities of the Serra Gaúcha. It is not an advocation or a different apparition of the sanctuary: this fact sheet reflects the history of the annual rosemary.
The map uses -29.1737433, -51.3465189, coordinates of the building of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Caravaggio identified by OpenStreetMap (way 222365861). The precision is verified_building and represents the place of celebration, not the exact point of a past rain or a supernatural location.
Documented history
The Diocese of Caxias do Sul places the origin of the Vitiva Romeria in 1899. The region was in severe drought and, according to the diocesan memory, the farmers came to the intercession of Our Lady of Caravaggio. The ninth began on 24 January and the main meeting or procession was linked to 2 February of that year. The currently celebrated Romeria retains that memory of supplication and gratitude.
The diocesan source describes a practice that has continued for more than a century: the faithful participate in the ninth, go to the sanctuary and present their fruits and tools of work. Recent editions document the presence of farmers, families, tractors and agricultural machinery, along with the celebration of the Eucharist and the blessing. They are verifiable elements of contemporary celebration and not a retroactive test of a miracle.
The Romeria is integrated into the calendar of the sanctuary and the pastoral of the diocese. The date and concrete form of each edition may change, but the core remains: community prayer, thanksgiving and petition for crops and for those living on the earth.
Tradition
The local tradition tells that, after the petition of 1899, an abundant rain fell and that the faithful interpreted the fact as a response from the Virgin. The diocese retains that memory as the origin of the Romry. Here it is presented with the necessary caution: it contains the devotional account and the continuity of the celebration, but it does not contain a coetarian canonical or meteorological file that demonstrates supernatural causality.
The prayer of the farmers expresses trust in God and the request for Mary's intercession. Mary is venerated as the Mother of the Lord; she does not love her. Adoration belongs only to God, and Romry must be read within that Christian distinction.
Legend and limits of the record
"Vautive rain" is a denomination born of the memory of drought and rain attributed by pilgrims to the intercession of Our Lady of Caravaggio. It is not published as a recognized miracle. Nor are weather phenomena attributed to the Virgin as proven facts. The history of the Romry is complete precisely by distinguishing the documented agricultural event, the prayer of the community and the subsequent devotional interpretation.
Ecclesial State
Consta permitted veneration: the Romeria is organized in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Caravaggio and documented by the Diocese of Caxias do Sul. There is no formal canonical recognition of the 1899 rain as a miracle. The authorization of the pilgrimage and the liturgy does not amount to the supernatural approval of the original account.
Anecdotes and stories
A unique feature of contemporary romance is the presence of rural life in the sanctuary: families come with machinery, fruits and signs of their work. The blessing of these elements makes a concrete need - rain and harvest - a public prayer of gratitude and responsibility, without erasing historical prudence on what is not recorded.
Prayer
St. Mary, Our Lady of Caravaggio, intercedes before God for the farmers, for those who depend on the land and for the families of Farroupilha. Teach us to receive the goods with gratitude, to share them with righteousness and to always trust Jesus Christ. Amen.
