The church of the Archangels of Bălți (Moldova)

The parish of the Holy Archangels is the only Catholic temple in Bălți, in northern Moldova, and belongs to the diocese of Chișinău, which covers the whole country. Its history condemns a century of fidelity: a church of 1821 destroyed in World War II, decades of Soviet suppression and a new temple consecrated in 2010 in the city's central park.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The first Catholic church in Bălți, built in 1821, was destroyed during World War II; the faithful continued to celebrate Holy Mass in the ancient Armenian chapel until in 1962 the Soviet authorities abolished the parish.
  • After years of persevering petitions, on 14 October 1988 the Soviet State re-registered the Catholic community of Bălți, which since 1987 had again had its own pastor, Father Jan Rudnițki.
  • In 1998 the town hall gave up a land in the central park and in 2000 the works began; on September 29, 2010, the feast of the Holy Archangels and the day of its headline, Bishop Anton Coșa of Chișinău consecrated the church and its altar.
  • The parish celebrates the veneration in Russian, Polish and Romanian, and his parish priest, Father Jacek Puć, also serves the communities of the peoples of Alexăndreni and Pervomaisc; the diocese of Chișinău, erected as such on 27 October 2001, brings together some 20,000 Catholics throughout Moldova.
