Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul of Duala
The Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, in the Akwa district, is the seat of the archdiocese of Duala and the mother church of Cameroonian Catholicism. His history starts with the German Palotine missionaries, who celebrated the country's first Catholic mass in 1890 and raised their first church in 1898.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- In March 1890 Pope Leo XIII created the Apostolic prefecture of Cameroon and entrusted it to the Palotine missionaries; on 25 October of that year Father Vieter landed in Duala with seven missionaries and the following day, 26 October 1890, he celebrated the first Catholic Mass on Cameroonian land.
- The first Catholic church of Duala was built in 1898 by the German palotines, who served the city until its departure after World War I; on that heritage later worked the French spiritist parents.
- The present cathedral, which combines Byzantine and Neo-Roman features, had its first stone on August 6, 1933 and was consecrated on March 22, 1936 in the presence of seven bishops, with homily of Monsignor Le Mailloux.
- The Archdiocese of Duala also honors the Mother of God under the title of the Rosary: among her parishes is Our Lady of the Rosary of Mambanda, in the area of Bonabéri, along with others dedicated to the Virgin as Our Lady of Love of Ngwelé.

The Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul of Duala keeps the origins of the Catholic faith in Cameroon: the first Mass of 1890, the first Palotine church of 1898 and the great temple consecrated in 1936. In her archdiocese, the Virgin of the Rosary has her own parish in Mambanda.
