Iglesia de San José de Esch-sur-Alzette
In Esch-sur-Alzette, the city of Luxembourg iron, there is no church dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary: its main temple is the church of San José, which was built between 1873 and 1877 in a neo-Gothic style when the steel industry multiplied the population. It is the largest and oldest church in the city, within the archdiocese of Luxembourg.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The municipality called in 1872 a contest for the new church; it was won by the architect Charles Arendt with a neo-Gothic project, and the temple, with cathedral air and two twin towers, was consecrated in 1877.
- San José was elected as the patron of the workers: a temple raised in full mining and steel expansion that put the workers of the basin under the protection of the Virgin's husband.
- Its interior was completed since 1881 under the direction of Alphonse- Pierre Kemp, with altars and glass windows executed in Tréveris and Munich, wall paintings of 1907-1908, the roseton of Gustave Zanter (1964) and the glass of the Jakob Schwarzkopf chorus (2000).
- Considered a particularly monumental example of the neo-Gothic in Luxembourg, it was declared a national monument in 1992 and today serves the parish Esch-Uelzecht Sainte-Famille.
San José
The church of San José Corona Esch-sur-Alzette since 1877 as an offering of a working city to the custodian of the Holy Family. Among their windows and neo-Gothic walls, generations of miners and steel workers have entrusted their work and their families to whom they best knew how to keep Jesus and Mary.
Por San José, patron of the workers and husband of Mary, guards the families who live from their work.
