Catedral del Santo Nombre de Jesús de Fianarantsoa (Ambozontany)

In Fianarantsoa, in the highlands of Madagascar, there is no church of the Rosary: the great temple of the city is the cathedral of the Holy Name of Jesus, raised on the hill of Ambozontany by the Rova, in the old city. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Fianarantsoa and the fruit of the mission of the Jesuits on the island.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The cathedral was founded in 1871 and dedicated in 1890: almost twenty years of work directed by Father Alphonse Taix, raised with bricks made on foot with the red clay of the region itself.
  • He was born of the Jesuit mission in Madagascar: after the death of Queen Ranavalona I, hostile to Christianity, Father Marc Finaz opened the way to faith, and the Jesuits later resumed schools and missions, including this cathedral of the highlands.
  • The city that hosts it, founded in 1831 on the hill of Ambozontany at 1,200 metres of altitude, bears a name that is almost a program: Fianarantsoa, "where you learn good."
  • It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Fianarantsoa, born as an apostolic vicariate on May 10, 1913 and now one of Madagascar's five metropolitan headquarters, with about a million Catholics.
