Our Lady of Victories and Peace: Kankan Cathedral
In Kankan, in the Muslim-majority High Guinea, the Catholic cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of Victories and Peace, the brother title of the Rosary: the feast of St. Mary of Victoria, established after Lepanto in 1571, is the one that the Church celebrates today as Our Lady of the Rosary. The seat was born as an apostolic prefecture on 12 May 1949 and was raised to the diocese on 17 November 1993.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The Catholic community of Kankan is a small flock on immense land: by 2014 the diocese attended about 72,455 Catholics, just 3.4% of the population, spread over 118,000 square kilometres of guinean savannah in 14 parishes.
- In this cathedral he was ordained priest Vincent Coulibaly on 9 May 1981, by the hands of Robert Sarah; and in it he also received the episcopal consecration on 12 February 1994, becoming the first Guinean bishop of the diocese before being archbishop of Conakry.
- The title of the cathedral unites two very Marian pleas: the victory - which Christianity attributed to the intercession of the Virgin of the Rosary - and peace, so necessary for a minority community that it lives day by day with its Muslim neighbours.
- Since 2021, Bishop Alexis Aly Tagbino has been pastoring the diocese, continuing the work of the missionaries who sowed the faith in Upper Guinea since the mid-20th century.
