Our Lady of the Perpetual Lautoka Relief (Fiji)
In Lautoka, west of the island of Viti Levu, the Catholic parish is entrusted to Our Lady of Perpetual Relief, within the archdiocese of Suva, which covers all of Fiji. The temple, one of the most well-known milestones in the city, reopened its doors in August 2019 after careful restoration.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The parish of Lautoka is set under the Marian title of the Perpetual Relief and belongs to the archdiocese of Suva, the only Catholic constituency of Fiji, elevated to archdiocese in 1966.
- The first Catholic mission arrived in Fiji in 1844, and in 1863 the Holy See created the Apostolic Prefecture of the Fiji Islands, the seed of the local Church that today hosts the community of Lautoka.
- In August 2019 the faithful celebrated the reopening of the temple after a comprehensive restoration, a project described by its responsible as a work of love born of faith.
- The parish community of Perpetuo Socorro runs the St Thomas school, owned by the archdiocese, thus linking devotion to Mary with the education of the young people of Lautoka.
