Cathedral of Santa Maria Auxiliadora de Wau (South Sudan)
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Auxiliadora (St. Mary Help of Christians), the seat of one of the oldest dioceses in the country. It is not a church of the Rosary, but is consecrated to the Virgin under the title of Assistant, very dear to the Common missionaries who evangelized this land. Its red brick building has been, in times of war, a refuge for thousands of displaced persons.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The Catholic presence took root in 1904, when ten Common missionaries arrived in Wau from Khartoum; in 1913 the Apostolic Prefecture of the Bahr el-Ghazal was erected, raised to vicariate in 1917 and renamed Wau in 1961.
- On December 12, 1974, the seat was raised to the Diocese of Wau ("Diodecis Vavensis"), a suffranea of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Juba and dependent on the Dicastery for Evangelization for its missionary character.
- The title is St. Mary Helper of Christians, whose memory is celebrated on May 24; it is a Marian devotion with a deep missionary and combonian root.
- The present temple, red brick with dome and rosette, was erected in 1956 and has become a symbol of the community's resistance to the wars that have ravaged the country.
- During the recent conflicts, the cathedral was a last resort: in April 2017 it hosted some 3,000 people, and in August of that year it housed more than 10,000 internally displaced persons, some of whom were sleeping by the altar; the building survived intact.
- Bishop Matthew Remijio Adam Gbitiku, a combonian named in 2020 and consecrated in 2021, reported in 2026 a gradual return to normal, with reopened parishes after years of exodus.

The Cathedral of Santa María Auxiliadora de Wau is the seat of one of the oldest dioceses in South Sudan, born of the Combonian mission of 1904 and raised to dioceses in 1974. His 1956 red brick temple, dedicated to the Virgin Helper, served as a refuge for more than ten thousand displaced during the war, a testimony of a faith that protects his people.
