History of Marian devotion in Rwanda
The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Rwanda, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.
In Rwanda, the Virgin is venerated under various vocations, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.
Marian devotion in Rwanda is fervent and profound. The Kibeho shrine is today an international pilgrimage center that receives visitors from all over the world. The Virgin of the Dolores of Kibeho is the patron of Rwanda. In addition to Kibeho, there are other Marian centers such as the shrine of Our Lady of Wisdom in Butare and the cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption in Kigali. The month of May is celebrated with special solemnity throughout the country, with processions and Marian vigil that bring together thousands of faithful.

Kibeho Parish, Mary Mother of God
It is the Catholic parish of Kibeho, in the district of Nyaruguru, south of Rwanda (diocese of Gikongoro), dedicated to Mary, Mother of God.

Our Lady of the Dolores of Kibeho, patron of Rwanda, venerated in the Marian sanctuary of Kibeho
The shrine of Our Lady of the Dolores of Kibeho is the place of the Marian apparitions recognized by the Church in 2001. The Virgin appeared between 1981 and 1989 calling for conversion. The sanctuary, with its imposing church and its crucis, is today one of the most important pilgrimage centers in Africa, visited by hundreds of thousands of faithful each year.

Our Lady of the Wisdom of Butare, venerated in the Cathedral of Butare
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Wisdom of Butare, also known as Our Lady of the Assumption, is the seat of the diocese of Butare, one of the oldest in Rwanda. Built in a neo-Gothic style, it houses an image of the Virgin of Wisdom very venerated by the Rwandan faithful.

Our Lady of Fatima of Kigali, venerated in the parish of Our Lady of Fatima of Kimihurura
The parish of Our Lady of Fatima of Kimihurura, in Kigali, is one of the most active Marian centers in the Rwandan capital. Every May 13, the faithful go to the procession in honor of Our Lady of Fatima, renewing the consecration of Rwanda to the Virgin Mary.
