The monastery where the Virgin appeared to Prince Andréi Bogoliubski.
The Bogoliubski Monastery was founded in 1158 by Prince Andréi Bogoliubski. According to tradition, the prince saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary in this place and ordered the construction of a church and a monastery.
La Virgen Bogoliubskaya
The icon of the Virgin Bogoliubskaya was painted on the command of Prince Andréi to commemorate the apparition. The icon shows the Virgin in prayer, with her hands raised. It is one of the oldest icons in Russia and is preserved in the Tretiakov Gallery.
The Church of Intercession on the Nerl
Near the monastery is the famous Church of Intercession on the Nerl (1165), considered one of the most beautiful in Russia. It is dedicated to the Feast of the Protection of the Virgin.
