Featured Marian icons
Inside is the icon of the Virgin of Vladímir, considered the most sacred in Russia, which was here from 1395 until it was transferred to the Tretiakov Gallery. There is also the Virgin of Donskoy, an icon of the 14th century attributed to Greek Theophanes.
Place of coronation
All the zars of Russia were crowned in this cathedral before the icon of the Virgin of Vladímir. Tradition considered that the Virgin herself anointed the sovereign through this icon. Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg, but the coronations continued here until 1896.
