Cathedral of the Assumption of Vladimir
Vladimir, Russia
The oldest cathedral in Russia that preserves frescoes by Andrei Rublev.
The Cathedral of the Assumption in Vladimir was built between 1158 and 1160 by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky. It is one of the oldest and most important cathedrals in Russia. Grand Princes of Vladimir were crowned here, and metropolitans were consecrated here.
Rublev's frescoes
In 1408, the masters Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny painted the interior frescoes. The Last Judgment fresco on the west wall is one of the masterpieces of Russian art. Rublev depicted the Virgin Mary interceding for the righteous.
The icon of Vladimir
The icon of Our Lady of Vladimir was in this cathedral from 1155 until 1395, when it was moved to Moscow to protect the city from Tamerlane. The faithful of Vladimir venerate a copy of the icon, which they consider miraculous.
