The Cathedral of the Virgin of Kazan in the city of Kazan is the main cathedral of the epoch of Kazan. It was built in the 19th century in neoclassical style to house relics associated with the Kazan icon.

The icon of the Virgin of Kazan is considered the protector of all Russia. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the girl Matrona and told her where to find the buried icon. The icon worked numerous miracles: cures, conversions and protections.
The stolen icon
In 1904, the icon was stolen from the cathedral by thieves who hoped to find jewelry in the frame. The icon was never recovered. In 2005, the Patriarchate of Moscow received a copy of Pope Benedict XVI as a gesture of ecumenical goodwill.
