The Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan in St. Petersburg is one of the largest churches in Russia. It was built between 1801 and 1811 to house the Kazan icon.
The Cathedral and Napoleon
After the victory over Napoleon in 1812, Marshal Kutuzov deposited the keys to the cities conquered before the icon of Kazan. The cathedral became a memorial of the Russian victory.
During the Soviet era, the cathedral was converted into the Museum of Atheism. In 1991, he was returned to the Orthodox Church. Today, it is one of the most visited buildings in St. Petersburg.
