Icon of the Iverskaya Virgin of Moscow
Moscow, Russia
The copy of the Iveron icon of Mount Athos that protects the Resurrection Gate.
In 1648, at the request of Patriarch Nikon, a copy of the icon of the Virgin Iverskaya (of Iberia) of the Monastery of Iveron of Mount Athos was brought to Moscow. The icon was placed in the chapel of the Resurrection Gate, next to the Red Square.
El icono de Iverón
The original Iveron icon is on Mount Athos and is considered the protector of the sacred mountain. According to tradition, the icon was miraculously saved from the iconoclasts: a widow threw it into the sea to avoid its destruction, and the icon floated to Mount Athos.
The chapel of the Resurrection Gate
The chapel where the Moscow copy was venerated was destroyed by the Soviets in 1931 and rebuilt in 1995. Today, the Muscovites pass before the icon as they enter the Red Square.
