Moscow, Russia
Where the most important copy of the Virgin of Vladímir is currently venerated.
The Virgin of Vladímir is the most venerated icon of the Russian Orthodox Church. The original is preserved in the Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmacy, next to the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow.
History of the icon
The icon was painted, according to tradition, by St. Luke the Evangelist. He was brought from Constantinople to Kiev in the 12th century and then moved to Vladímir in 1155. In 1395, he was taken to Moscow to protect the city of Tamerlán.
The miracle of 1395
According to tradition, when the icon arrived in Moscow, Tamellan saw a vision of the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels and ordered the withdrawal of their armies. Since then, the Virgin of Vladímir has been considered the protector of Moscow and all of Russia.
