In 1579, the city of Kazan was destroyed by a fire. Among the ashes, a girl named Matróna found an icon of the Virgin Mary intact. The Virgin appeared to him and told him that the icon should be venerated.
The icon that worked miracles
The Kazan icon was placed in the city cathedral and worked many miracles: cures, conversions and protections. The faithful of Kazan venerate the icon as the mother who protects them.
In 1904, the icon was stolen and never recovered. However, copies are venerated throughout the country. The faithful believe that the Virgin of Kazan continues to protect Russia.
