The Monastery of the Virgin of Kazan (Bogoroditsky) was built in the exact place where, according to tradition, the icon of the Virgin of Kazan was found in 1579. The girl Matrona discovered the icon buried under the foundations of a house destroyed by a fire.
History of the monastery
The monastery was founded in 1579 by order of the Tsar Ivan the Terrible. Over the centuries, it became one of Russia's most important pilgrimage centers. The original icon was here until his theft in 1904.
Destruction and restoration
In 1930, the monastery was destroyed by the Soviets. In 2016, it was rebuilt and reconsecrated. Today it houses a venerated copy of the Kazan icon and is an active pilgrimage center.
