Monastery founded after an apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1314.
The Monastery of the Virgin of Tolga was founded in 1314 near Yaroslavl. According to tradition, Bishop Prokhor of Yaroslavl saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary in this place as he traveled along the Volga River. Our Lady told him to build a monastery.
El icon de Tolga
In the place of apparition, an icon of the Virgin Mary was found that became the main object of veneration of the monastery. The Tolga icon is considered miraculous and has worked numerous cures over the centuries.
The monastery today
The monastery survived the Soviet era and was returned to the Church in 1987. Today it is an active female convent and an important pilgrimage center. The party of the Tolga icon is held on August 21.
