The Cathedral of the Ascension of Novosibirsk was built in 1997- 2002. It is the largest cathedral in Siberia and the center of Orthodox life in Russia's third largest city.

The Siberian Cossacks, who colonized the region in the 16th and 17th centuries, carried with them icons of the Virgin. The Virgin of Kazan was particularly venerated as a protector of travellers and settlers.
