The Protection Monastery (Pokrovsky) of Nizhny Novgorod was founded in the 14th century. It is dedicated to the Feast of the Protection of the Virgin (Pokrov), which commemorates the apparition of the Virgin Mary in Constantinople in the 10th century
The fiesta of the Pokrov
In Russian tradition, the Pokrov party (October 1) is one of the most important. The legend tells that during an attack on Constantinople, the Virgin Mary appeared in the church of Blachernae and extended her mantle over the faithful, protecting them from the enemy.
The monastery and the defense of the city
The monastery of Nizhny Novgorod played an important role in defending the city during the Tatar invasions. The faithful believed that the Protection of Our Lady was literally spreading over the city.
