The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Yuzhno- Sajalinsk was built in 1996. It is the main Orthodox church on the island of Saxalin, the largest island in Russia in the Pacific.

Sajalin was colonized by Russia in the 19th century. The first settlers carried icons from the Virgin Mary. The island has a complex history: it was disputed between Russia and Japan, and many of the Russian settlers were Japanese or Korean.
The Virgin of Kazan in Saxalin
The icon of the Virgin of Kazan is venerated in the cathedral as a protector of the inhabitants of the island. The feast of the Virgin of Kazan is celebrated with special solemnity in Saxalin.
