La Catedral de Santa Sofía de Nóvgorod fue construida en 1045-1050 por el príncipe Vladímir Yaroslávich. Es la catedral más antigua de Rusia aún en uso. Su nombre, Sofía, significa «Sabiduría Divina», un concepto asociado a la Virgen María en la teología ortodoxa.
The Virgin of the Signs (Znamenie)
Inside is the icon of the Virgin of the Signs (Znamenie) of the 12th century. According to tradition, in 1170, during an attack on Novgorod, the icon was carried in procession and an enemy arrow wounded the cheek of the Virgin in the icon. The blood sprung miraculously and the attackers were defeated.

This miracle is one of the most famous in Russian history. The icon of the Signs became the protector of Novgorod and is venerated as a symbol of divine intercession.
