The Feast of the Protection of the Virgin (Pokrov) is held on October 1. It commemorates the apparition of the Virgin Mary in the church of Blachernae in Constantinople in the 10th century, when she extended her mantle (pokrov) over the faithful to protect them.
The Pokrov in Russian tradition
In Russia, the Pokrov is one of the most popular parties. It marks the beginning of the fall and is associated with the protection of the Virgin over the Russian people. Many monasteries and churches are dedicated to this feast.

The Pokrov icon shows the Virgin Mary extending her mantle over the faithful, with saints interceding. It is an icon exclusively Russian, with no equivalent in Greek tradition.
