In Novgorod, one of the oldest cities in Russia, an icon of the Virgin Mary was venerated, which, according to tradition, saved the city from the invasion of the Teutonic knights.
The miracle of Novgorod
In 1239, the Teutonic knights threatened Novgorod. The citizens took out the icon of the Virgin in procession around the walls. According to tradition, the Virgin made the invaders withdraw.
The Novgorod icon is venerated as the protector of the city. The faithful believe that the Virgin Mary continues to protect Novgorod.
