The icon of Our Lady of Smolensk is one of the most venerated in Russia. According to tradition, he was brought from Constantinople in the 11th century and placed in Smolensk Cathedral.

In 1812, when Napoleon invaded Russia, the icon was brought in procession before the Russian army. The soldiers believed that the Virgin would protect them. After Napoleon's withdrawal, the icon was returned to Smolensk with honors.
