The Cathedral of the Protection of the Virgin of Vladikavkaz was built in 1893. It is the main Orthodox church in North Ossetia and a symbol of the Russian presence in the Caucasus.
The Day of Protection in the Caucasus
The Feast of the Protection of the Virgin (Pokrov) is particularly important in the Caucasus, where Christians have lived for centuries among mostly Muslim populations. The Protection of Our Lady is invoked as a defense of the faith.
The martyrs of the Caucasus
During the Soviet era, many Christians from the Caucasus were persecuted by their faith. The Cathedral of Vladikavkaz was closed and reopened in 1943, when Stalin partially allowed religious freedom during World War II.
