Yaroslavl, located on the banks of the Volga River, is famous for its numerous churches decorated with frescoes from the 17th century. Many of these churches are dedicated to Marian advocacy or contain important cycles of frescoes on the life of the Virgin.
The Church of Elijah Prophet
The Church of Elijah Prophet (1647-1650) contains one of the most complete cycles of frescoes in Russia, including scenes of the life of the Virgin Mary. The frescoes were painted by the best teachers of Yaroslavl.
The Church of St. John Chrysostom
This 17th-century church houses frescoes of high artistic quality, including the Annunciation and Sleeping of the Virgin.
