Origin and history

The image and the sanctuary

It is a wooden church, considered one of the largest in North America and one of the most emblematic acadian churches. Its main tower is about 56 meters high, which contributes to its fame. It is part of the historical heritage of Nova Scotia and is integrated into the cultural landscape of the acadian community, next to the Université Sainte-Anne. A repeated anecdote in local tradition is the pride of the acadian community for having raised such a large wooden church with limited resources, as an expression of its love and trust in the Virgin Mary. No concrete miracles attributed to a particular image of the Virgin have been found in solid sources, so they do not record.

Sponsorship and coronation

The title is St. Mary (Sainte- Marie), invoked as the Mother of God within the Acadian tradition of Marian devotion. There is no pontifical coronation or basilica title.

Party and devotion

The dedication to Santa Maria reflects the deep Marian devotion of the Acadian people, marked by processions and patron parties (feast of Sainte- Marie) documented in the press and in local publications.

Link to the Rosary

It is possible to assume a traditional Marian piety with prayer of the Rosary; however, the accessible sources on local heritage and history do not explicitly detail the Rosary's cofradies or other specific practices, so there is no specific information on this.

A flower for the Virgin

Offer a simple prayer to this Marian devotion. Pray a Hail Mary for Canada and for world peace.

Pray Hail Mary
