History of Marian devotion in Samoa

Christianity reached the islands of Samoa at the hands of missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, introduced by the evangelizers, was rooted in the local Christian communities, which found in Mary a maternal figure close to their own culture.

The Marian advocacy in Samoa reflects the diversity of missionary traditions: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes. The small Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary and the celebration of the Marian parties.

The Marian tradition on the islands of Samoa

Samoa, known as the "Pacific Cot," has a strong Catholic tradition that dates back to the arrival of the French Marist missionaries in 1845. The Virgin Mary occupies a central place in Samoan piety, where she is known as "Mary le Tupu" (Mary the Queen) and her feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated with great solemnity throughout the country. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Apia, built between 1867 and 1887, is one of the most emblematic buildings in Samoa and the heart of the archdiocese of Samoa- Apia. Its imposing white façade and its bell tower dominate the profile of the city, and inside it houses an image of the Immaculate carved in ivory by Filipino artisans that was donated by Pope Leo XIII.

Our Lady of Lourdes of Leulumoega

Party: 11 February · Place: Leulumoega (Upolu, Samoa)

In the town of Leulumoega, on the northwest coast of the island of Upolu, is the church of Our Lady of Lourdes, built in 1902 by the marists. The temple is known for its impressive artificial grotto, built with volcanic rock and white coral, which replicates the Grotto of Massabielle. Every 11 February, the community celebrates a pilgrimage that attracts faithful from all over the island. The mass is held in the open air next to the grotto, followed by a procession in which children dressed in white bring flowers to the Virgin. Local tradition tells that during the 1918 flu epidemic, the inhabitants of Leulumoega prayed the Rosary to this grotto and the people were miraculously preserved from the disease.

Our Lady of the Pago Pago Rosary

Party: 7 October · Place: Druming (Samoa Americana, Samoa)

In Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary is the seat of the Diocese of Samoa- Pago Pago. Built in 1966 in a modern Polynesian style, the cathedral features a facade that evokes a "phale" (traditional Samoan house) with a bell tower that rises to the sky as a canoe candle. The interior is decorated with a lid (crust fabric) painted with Marian motifs and wood shell embedded in the altar. The Catholic community of American Samoa, though small, keeps a very alive devotion to the Virgin of the Rosary, and every 7 October organizes a procession that runs through the port of Pago Pago, blessing the fishing ships that are the sustenance of many families.

Our Lady of the Perpetual Relief of Salelologa

Party: 27 June · Place: Salelologa (Savai’i, Samoa)

"Our Lady of the Perpetual Relief of Salelologa, pray for us.
