Origin and history

According to the accessible documentation, the present temple was consecrated on October 19, 1899 and later elevated to the basilica range. It is the largest Catholic church in the archdiocese and one of the great neo-Gothic churches in eastern Canada. They do not contain, in open sources, detailed accounts of the most remote origins of the parish or of the succession of previous temples on the same site.

The image and the sanctuary

The building is usually cited as one of the most prominent examples of neo-Gothic architecture in eastern Canada. There is no detailed information in the consulted sources about a concrete miraculous Marian image, famous exvotes or specific pilgrimages linked to a particular advocation; Marian devotion is the same as a cathedral dedicated to the Virgin. Therefore, a Taumaturgical Marian sanctuary is not documented here, but the cathedral and basilical church of the Archdiocese.

Sponsorship and coronation

As a cathedral, it is the seat of the Archbishop of Halifax- Yarmouth and exercises his function as the main church of the archdiocese under the dedication to St. Mary. There is no canonical coronation of Marian image associated with this temple, nor a Marian patronage formally proclaimed beyond the cathedral dedication to the Virgin.

Party and devotion

In the accessible sources, there is no Marian feast of its own and specific temple with date and celebrations documented beyond the ordinary liturgical life of a cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria. Marian devotion is part of the common piety of the Archdiocese.

Link to the Rosary

It is not known that the cathedral is a sanctuary of the Rosary or that it has an explicit dedication to the Holy Rosary. It is reasonable that in its ordinary pastoral care the Rosary is revered (especially in May and October), but there is no specific documentation verifiable in sources of public domain that attests a unique or official link to the Rosary - for example, as a rosarian sanctuary or with canonically erected fellowship - beyond common Marian piety.

A flower for the Virgin

Offer a simple prayer to this Marian devotion. Pray a Hail Mary for Canada and for world peace.

Pray Hail Mary
