Santa María de la Gruta de Buoho (Ghana)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

Santa María de la Gruta de Buoho is located in Buoho, in the district of Afigya-Kwabre South, Ashanti Region, Ghana. Catholic and administrative sources describe the place as a site of pilgrimage and Marian devotion. OpenStreetMap returns the district as a mapping relationship, not an unequivocal geometry of the grotto; therefore the accuracy of the marker is province and does not represent the inner GPS of the sanctuary.

Documented history

The grotto was completed in eight months and was dedicated on November 12, 1949, according to the history cited by Catholic sources over the sanctuary. The diocese to which it belongs is identified as the diocese of Konongo- Mampong. The available documentation allows to speak of a Catholic place of pilgrimage in Buoho and of a historical dedication; it does not allow to safely complete all the names, constructive phases or subsequent changes of the compound.

An administrative document of the Afigya-Kwabre South district includes the Buoho Grotto among the places of interest and recognizes its presence in the territory. A 2026 Catholic publication recalls that Mary's image of the sanctuary was dedicated in 1949 and that the place has attracted pilgrims from the Ashanti Region and other parts of Ghana. These data are kept as a history of the place, without adding figures that are not sufficiently documented.

Memory, image and pilgrimage

The sanctuary was born in the context of the expansion of the devotion of the Rosary and the Marian Grotto of Lourdes. The story transmitted by the sources speaks of a hill, community work and an image of Mary to which the faithful pray. The image leads to the veneration of the Mother of Jesus and to the request for his intercession; it is not the object of worship, which corresponds only to God.

The existence of a sanctuary and its pilgrimages do not prove a local apparition. In the verified sources, there is neither a apparition of Mary in Buoho nor a concrete miracle recognized by ecclesial authority. The fact sheet retains the difference between the history of construction, devotional tradition and any extraordinary affirmation.

Tradition and Legend

The local narrations on the hill, the image and participation of traditional authorities are part of the memory of the sanctuary when they are transmitted by the sources. They are presented as a tradition or as a documented history according to the support available. They do not become apparitions or supernatural facts for repeating themselves in stories of pilgrims. In particular, the fact sheet does not affirm Marian cures or promises that are not reflected in an ecclesial document.

Ecclesial State

The sanctuary is a Catholic place of prayer and pilgrimage linked to the diocese of Konongo- Mampong. Registered permitted veneration for public devotion and pastoral use of the place. There is no specific pronunciation that declares a supernatural apparition in Buoho. The point of the map is deliberately maintained on a district scale until a site coordinate appears.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of the Church, accompanies the pilgrims of Buoho and the communities of Ghana. Teach us to pray with humility, to seek your Son and to turn devotion into service to those who suffer. Intercede for us before Jesus. Amen.
