Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in China

Chinese Marian Devotion

The Holy Rosary has been one of the most widespread and practiced Marian devotions in China over the centuries. Since the arrival of the first Dominican missionaries in the 16th century, the prayer of the rosary became the "spiritual weapon" of Chinese Catholics in the face of persecution.

The Dominicans and the Rosary in China

The Order of Preachers (Dominican) was the main diffuser of the Holy Rosary's devotion in China. The Dominican missionaries arrived in the provinces of Fujian and Taiwan in the 17th century, establishing communities where the prayer of the rosary was central devotion.

San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint of Chinese origin, was martyred in Japan in 1637 along with his Dominican companions. His devotion to the rosary was a constant in his life and martyrdom, and he became a model for Chinese Catholics.

The rosary during the persecutions

During the Boxer Rebellion (1900), the prayer of the rosary was the main devotion of the persecuted Catholics. The faithful gathered in secret to pray the rosary, asking for the protection of the Virgin Mary. Many attributed their survival to the intercession of Mary obtained through the prayer of the rosary.

During the Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976), the prayer of the rosary became an act of spiritual resistance. The clandestine Catholics prayed the rosary in a low voice, hiding, keeping faith alive in the darkest moments.

The rosary in contemporary China

At present, rosary prayer remains one of the most practiced devotions in China. The parishes regularly organize community prayers of the rosary, especially during the months of May and October. The Chinese faithful have developed their own ways of praying the rosary, adapting it to Chinese cultural sensitivity.

The Rosary and Evangelization

The rosary has been a fundamental instrument of evangelization in China. Its simplicity and depth make it a prayer accessible to all, from the simplest to the most educated. The missionaries found in the rosary a bridge between Christian spirituality and Buddhist and confusing meditation.
