Marian devotion
Where is he?
The icon of the Virgin of Mukáchevo is venerated in the Basilian monastery of San Nicolás, in Mukáchevo, Transcarpatia region, Ukraine. The coordinate corresponds to the monastery cartographed by OpenStreetMap as Mukachevskyi Monastery of Saint Nicholas. Wikidata also identifies Mukáchevo as the city linked to the place. This fact sheet distinguishes the current point of veneration from the places where the image was hidden or guarded during the 20th century.
Documented history
The Order of San Basilio Magno takes up the ancient tradition of a monastery of San Nicolás prior to 1242 and recalls that the whole was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In the 1920s, the monastery became a center for the renewal of the basic life in Transcarpatia. In 1926, Pope Pius XI gave to the monastery an icon of the Virgin Mary that the source date in the 15th century and possibly relates to Constantinople.
The image was solemnly transferred to the church of San Nicolás on the Cherneche hill on June 27, 1926, according to the institutional source. The event placed the icon at the center of the Marian devotion of the region. The reference to a possible constantinopolitan origin is maintained as a possibility transmitted by the source, not as an artistic attribution that this fact sheet can demonstrate on its own.
When Soviet power came to Transcarpatia, the monastery was liquidated and the monks were expelled in 1947. The image was first hidden in Svaliava and then by a family of Mukáchevo. In 2000 he passed to the Basilian church of the Holy Spirit of Malyi Bereznyi. This tour documents the custody of the image by communities and families in a period of religious persecution.
After the Basilian parents resumed their ministry in Mukáchevo, the monastery of St. Nicholas was founded in a new location. On July 16, 2009, the icon was solemnly moved there. The Basilian Order indicates that, with the blessing of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, a feast of its own was established on July 16 and that since 2010 it has been held as an eparquial feast of the Greek-Catholic epoch of Mukáchevo.
Tradition
The devotion has been expressed through solemn transfers, family custody, Basilian celebrations and the eparquial feast of July 16. The faithful venerate the image and ask Mary for her intercession before God. Adoration corresponds only to God, and the veneration of the image must lead to a life more united to Jesus Christ.
Legend
The possible constantinopolitan provenance and some details of the ancient history of the monastery belong to the traditional framework of the Basilian Order. They are not presented as independent archaeological conclusions. There is also no Marian apparition linked to the icon in the consulted source; therefore, the fact sheet does not invent or attribute a supernatural phenomenon other than the documented cult.
Ecclesial State
It is an eastern Catholic cult, a basic presence, a feast of its own established with the blessing of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches and an equial feast since 2010, according to the institutional source. These data document the liturgical and pastoral life of the icon. They do not amount to a decree declaring an apparition, and it does not contain in the consulted source a judgment of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on an apparition associated with Mukáchevo.
Anecdotes and stories
The itinerary of the image - Mukáchevo monastery, hiding in Svaliava, custody of a family, Malyi Bereznyi and return to the monastery of San Nicolás - summarizes the convulsive history of the eastern Catholic communities of the region. The feast of July 16 currently maintains that memory within the life of the epoch and not just as a museum piece.
