Main data
Origin and history
La Basilica of the National Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception (Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception) is the main Marian sanctuary of the United States, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, proclaimed patron of the country by Pope Pius IX in 1847. The devotion to Mary under this title was gradually rooted in the American Church, especially through the liturgy and European Catholic immigration.
The construction of the sanctuary in Washington, D.C. began in the 20th century as a national project of the bishops of the United States, who wanted to erect a great Marian temple in honor of the country's patron. The first stone was blessed in 1920 and the crypt was opened to veneration in 1924; the works of the higher sanctuary lasted for decades, until their solemn dedication in 1959. The church was later raised to minor basilica and officially recognized as National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, becoming the largest Catholic church in the country.
There is no apricionist tradition or foundational legends linked to a concrete miraculous image; it is a dogmatic and liturgical advocation, focused on the privilege of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, defined as dogma by Blessed Pius IX in 1854. When it comes to "tradition" in this sanctuary, it refers above all to the progressive historical consolidation of the patronage of the Immaculate over the United States and the development of its national cult, not to local private apparitions or revelations.
The image and the sanctuary
In this sanctuary there is not a single "headline image" in the classic sense, but several prominent representations of the Immaculate Conception and more than 80 Marian chapels and oratoriums who present various claims of the Virgin from all over the world. One of the most emblematic representations is the great mosaic of the “Christ in Majesty” in the apse of the upper sanctuary and, in the strictly Marian context, the image of the Immaculate in modern iconographic style, located in the main place of veneration; it is made in noble materials (mosaic and sculpture), but the exact details of author, technique and specific date of each piece do not accurately reflect in the sources consulted. Therefore, more than a single size of veneration, the Basilica offers an extensive and universal Marian iconographic program.
The temple bears the official name of “Basílica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception”. Es una minor basilicathe national sanctuary of the United States and, by extension, the largest Marian sanctuary in the country, located in the university district of Washington, D.C., next to the Catholic University of America. It stands out for its Neo-Roman-Byzantine style, its large central dome covered with mosaics, its bell tower, the lower crypt with numerous chapels and the vast upper sanctuary, conceived as a great national church dedicated to the Virgin.
It does not consist of official sources with a homonymous headquarters in the department of Washington, Colombia, and the sanctuary described belongs to Washington, D.C., United States. In the ecclesial and devotional documentation consulted there is no "Basilica of the National Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception" in Colombian territory under this specific title; therefore, the advocation treated here corresponds to the United States national sanctuary, no to a Colombian sanctuary.
Sponsorship and coronation
La Immaculate Conception es patrona de los Estados Unidos de América Since 1847, by statement of Pius IX, and the shrine of Washington is the main national temple where this patronage is expressed. This is not a municipal or diocesan patronage, but National, linked to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and recognized by the Holy See.
In the sources consulted on the Basilica of the National Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception, it is not clearly and documented. canonical coronation specific of a specific headline image (in the way of other Marian shrines). Therefore, with regard to this vocation in this place, it should be indicated: "does not contain a documented canonical coronation".
Party and devotion
The main feast of this advocation is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, que la Iglesia celebra el 8 December. In the United States it is solemnity of precept and is celebrated with particular liturgical splendor in the Basilica of the National Sanctuary, with solemn Mass, inner processions and various devotional acts.
As a national sanctuary, the Basilica receives during the year numerous diocesan, national and international pilgrimagesorganized by episcopal conferences, parishes, religious communities, movements and lay associations. It also welcomes significant celebrations for the different linguistic and ethnic communities, which find there Marian chapels linked to their countries of origin (for example, chapels dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Lourdes, Czestochowa, etc.). There are no official figures of annual inflow in the sources consulted, but it is generally recognized that it is one of the most visited places of worship of the Catholic Church in North America.
Devotion is expressed above all by:
– participación en la Eucharist y en la Liturgia de las Horas en la solemnidad del 8 de diciembre y otras fiestas marianas; – visitas a las distintas Marian chapels para oración personal, encendido de velas y promesas; – celebraciones nacionales, especialmente en torno a la patrona del país y a acontecimientos de la Iglesia en Estados Unidos.
Link to the Rosary
The specific sources on the sanctuary do not mention a unique and exclusive practice of the Rosary linked only to this advocation, as could happen in other Marian shrines. However, the Rosary is an ordinary part of the devotional life of the pilgrims and many of the celebrations that take place in the Basilica, especially in strong Marian times (May, October, novies to the Immaculate and other advocacy).
From the theological and spiritual point of view, the relationship between the Immaculate Conception y el Rosary is deep: the joyful mysteries contemplate the initial itinerary of the life of Christ in which Mary, conceived without original sin, cooperates in a unique way with the plan of salvation; the luminous mysteries allow to meditate on her discreet presence in the public life of the Lord; the painful ones invite to contemplate the intimate union of Mary with the Passion of Christ, and the glorious ones culminate in the glorification of which she is "every holy," preserved from sin from her conception.
Thus, even if there is no form of prayer of the Rosary proper to the sanctuary, the Rosario accompanies and feeds the devotion to the Immaculate Conception that is lived in the Basilica of the National Sanctuary: it helps to internalize the mystery that this temple celebrates, to ask for the grace of purity of heart and to join, with Mary, the life of Christ, in communion with the Church who pilgrims in the United States and throughout the world.
