Our Lady of Surichigol (Gongju, South Korea)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

Surichigol is a historic place of Marian devotion located in Sinpung-myeon, within Gongju, in South Chungcheong (South Korea). The coordinate of this file identifies the town of Sinpung-myeon returned by OpenStreetMap, not the exact building of the sanctuary: this is why it is kept with location accuracy. The Catholic Episcopal Conference of Korea includes the place in its directory, while the historical sources relate it to the clandestine Church of the 19th century.

Documented history

The history of Surichigol is linked to the persecution of Korean Catholics. After the martyrdom of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, Bishop Jean- Joseph Ferréol and St. Antoine Daveluy found refuge in this area. On November 2, 1846, they organized a Korean branch of the Archicofrady of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was intended to support the prayer for the persecuted Church. This date and the presence of the missionaries belong to the history transmitted by local and historical sources; there is no addition of a date of the foundation of the sanctuary that is not recorded.

The memory of the place also preserves the prayer of the first faithful. The communities of the nearby villages came on Sundays and prayed in Korean before an image of the Mother of God. The modern identification of the site is located in 1984-1985, and the present monastery and house of retreats were completed in 1990 according to the research report. These stages show the continuity between the Church who lived in hiding and the place of pilgrimage that today can receive the faithful.

Tradition

The tradition of Surichigol recalls a silent consecration of the Korean Church to Mary and St. Joseph during the years of persecution. The history of the place links that memory to the prayer for the unity of the Church, the peace and perseverance of Christians. Tradition does not appear as an apparition: it describes a way of living faith in circumstances of risk and of entrusting Mary to intercession by the community.

Legend and limits of the record

There is no local Marian apparition or a prodigy subject to an ecclesial judgment. Nor is a power of its own attributed to the image. The pilgrimage, the memory of missionaries and the prayer of generations are valuable devotional realities, but they must be kept separate from a supernatural affirmation that the sources consulted do not make.

Ecclesial State

The state is stated as permitted veneration. Surichigol is a place of worship and pilgrimage in the directory of the Catholic Episcopal Conference of Korea and is part of the pastoral life of the diocese of Daejeon. This label expresses the existence of a Catholic sanctuary and public devotion; it does not amount to approving an apparition or to declaring miraculous the graces that pilgrims can attribute to the intercession of Mary.

Anecdotes and stories

The unique value of Surichigol is that Marian devotion is integrated into the history of a Church that had to be organized in secret. The image and prayer remind those who maintained the faith when reunited could pose danger. The place also calls for reconciliation and peace on the Korean peninsula, always from Christian prayer and not from a political reading of devotional accounts.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of the persecuted Church, pray for the Christians who suffer and for those who seek God in silence. Teach us to persevere with charity, to work for peace and to ask your intercession to follow Jesus Christ with truth. Amen.

The memory of a hidden Church

Surichigol is not understood only as a pilgrimage destination. Its meaning was born from a community that had to preserve prayer and ecclesial organization in conditions of persecution. The Archicofrady of the Immaculate Heart of Mary expresses that community dimension: it was not just a private devotion, but to entrust to Mary the perseverance of the entire local Church. The presence of Ferreol and Daveluy makes the place a witness to how the mission, catechesis and Marian life were held together with the faithful.

The modern recovery of the site and the construction of the monastery allow this story to have a visible form. The visitor can approach a memory that does not depend on an extraordinary account: persecution, prayer in Korean, service of missionaries and continuity of veneration are sufficient to explain the value of the sanctuary. When one speaks of the silent consecration of Korea to Mary and St. Joseph, one retains a spiritual interpretation of that memory, not a decree on private revelation.

That's why the file leaves history and prudence together. Devotion can ask for Mary's intercession for the unity of Christians, for peace and for those who cannot freely profess their faith; at the same time, research must clearly tell what comes from documents, what belongs to tradition and what is not. This distinction honors both the Korean Church and the pilgrims who pray in Surichigol.
